Fija nitrogeno atmosferico a cambio de carbono organico suministrado por la planta hospedadora, contribuyendo a la fertilidad del suelo y reduciendo la necesidad de fertilizantes nitrogenados sinteticos. La especie fue nombrada en honor a la microbiologa Dra. Laguerre.
