A tiny, chestnut-red seedeater of open grasslands, weedy fields, and marshes distributed across Central America and most of South America east of the Andes to Argentina, ruddy-breasted seedeaters have warm rufous-red plumage in males with darker wings. Among the most widely distributed Sporophila seedeaters, they thrive in disturbed agricultural landscapes and secondary growth. They forage in small to large flocks on grass seeds and cereal crops.
