It inhabits calcareous soils in temperate European forests, forming ectomycorrhizal associations with oak, hazel, and other hardwood trees. This subterranean fungus forms nutrient-exchange partnerships with tree roots and disperses spores via burrowing animals attracted to its pungent aroma.
