Mallomonas calceolus is a unicellular, silica-scaled chrysophyte with characteristic slipper-shaped scales covering the cell surface. It inhabits cool oligotrophic freshwater lakes and ponds in temperate and boreal regions. This mixotrophic flagellate performs photosynthesis and can also ingest bacteria as supplemental nutrition.
