Red-crowned Parakeet

A small, bright green parakeet with a vivid red cap and cheek patches, red-crowned parakeets are endemic to New Zealand where they inhabit forest from sea level to alpine zones. Highly adaptable, they forage on seeds, flowers, fruit, and insects. Endangered on the mainland from introduced predators including rats, stoats, and cats, they persist in healthy numbers on offshore islands free from mammals.
