As an Old World fruit bat, it plays an important ecological role in pollination and seed dispersal across the island's native forests. The species inhabits tropical moist lowland and montane forests, roosting in caves and dense vegetation. Its range is severely restricted by the small land area of the Comoros, making it inherently vulnerable to habitat loss. Deforestation driven by agricultural expansion and charcoal production has significantly reduced available forest cover on the islands.
