The Common Powderhorn, <em>Cladonia coniocraea</em>, is a lichen in the family Cladoniaceae, formed through the symbiotic association of a fungus and photosynthetic algae. It is a cosmopolitan species found across Asia, Europe, and North America, typically colonizing the bark of trees, rotting wood, soil, and mossy substrates in temperate and boreal forests. The species is characterized by its small, granular primary squamules and elongated, hollow, stalked fruiting structures called podetia, which typically taper to a pointed tip and give the lichen its powderhorn appearance. The podetia surface is typically coated with greenish-gray to pale soredia, fine powdery reproductive granules. <em>Cladonia coniocraea</em> is a pioneer species capable of establishing on disturbed substrates and plays a role in primary succession. Like all lichens, it is sensitive to air pollution, particularly sulfur dioxide, and its abundance is often used as a bioindicator of air quality. The species is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List given its wide distribution and tolerance of varied environmental conditions.
