Common Cusimanse
Crossarchus obscurus, commonly known as the common cusimanse or long-nosed cusimanse, is a small social mongoose in the family Herpestidae. This species is native to the rainforests and dense tropical forests of West and Central Africa. Common cusimanses are highly social animals that typically live in family groups and forage cooperatively on the forest floor, using their elongated, flexible snouts to root through leaf litter and soil in search of invertebrates, small vertebrates, and fallen fruits. They communicate through a variety of vocalizations and are known to mob and harass potential predators. The species is diurnal and terrestrial, sheltering in burrows or dense vegetation at night. Common cusimanses are assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with populations considered stable across their range. Biological traits such as lifespan and body measurements remain poorly documented in the scientific literature.
