The IUCN lists it as Endangered due to its extremely small range, estimated tiny population, and ongoing loss of montane forest habitat from agricultural encroachment and periodic eruptions from Karthala. Like other scops owls, it is presumed to be insectivorous, hunting invertebrates nocturnally, though specific dietary data remain limited.
