Aloe species at altitude typically experience different rainfall patterns, lower temperatures, and higher UV radiation than their lowland relatives, driving adaptations in leaf chemistry, water storage capacity, and root architecture. High-altitude aloes often produce rosettes with thick, succulent leaves containing gel-rich mesophyll tissue for water storage, adapted to both the seasonal dry periods and the fog drip typical of cloud forest margins. Many montane African aloes are important nectar sources for sunbirds and other highland bird species that serve as their primary pollinators. Common Seal
The most widely distributed pinniped, harbor seals inhabit temperate and subarctic coastal waters of both the North Atlantic and North Pacific. Adults reach up to 130 kg and spend roughly equal time at sea hunting fish, squid, and crustaceans and hauling out on beaches or rocks to rest. Their large, expressive eyes are adapted for underwater vision in low light. Harbor seals are a critical food source for orcas, sharks, and polar bears.
