The Cliff Mining Bee, Andrena species in the family Andrenidae, is a solitary ground-nesting bee that excavates tunnels in cliff faces, earthen banks, and compacted sandy or loamy soils, where the loose or friable substrates exposed in cliff profiles provide ideal nesting conditions. Mining bees in the genus Andrena are among the most species-rich solitary bee genera in the world, with hundreds of species across the Holarctic region, many narrowly specialized in their choice of pollen host plants. Female cliff mining bees construct vertical or angled burrows in cliff faces, with lateral cells off the main shaft, each containing a pollen ball and a single egg. Males are typically smaller and emerge before females to establish territories near nesting sites. Many Andrena species are oligolectic, collecting pollen from only a small number of plant species, making their populations sensitive to the availability of specific flowering plants in the landscape surrounding nesting areas. Cliff and bank nesting habitats provide well-drained, sun-warmed substrates essential for brood development. Cloud forest rocket frogs are small poison frogs in the genus Hyloxalus (family Dendrobatidae) native to cloud forests of the northern and central Andes in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Unlike the brilliantly colored poison dart frogs of lowland forests, Hyloxalus species typically display more cryptic coloration in brown, black, and olive tones with subtle dorsolateral stripes, though their skin secretions contain bioactive alkaloids providing chemical defense. They inhabit the humid leaf litter and rocky streamsides of cloud forest floors at elevations typically between 1,000 and 3,000 meters, where high rainfall and persistent mist maintain the moist conditions required for their moisture-sensitive skin and terrestrial reproductive strategies. Males carry tadpoles on their backs to small streams or seeps for development. Cloud forest rocket frogs are among the most chytrid-affected vertebrate groups globally: Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis chytridiomycosis has caused catastrophic population collapses, and several Hyloxalus species are now Critically Endangered or extinct in the wild due to this fungal disease interacting with climate change and habitat loss.
