Cigarette Beetle

Sphaericus velhocabrali is a beetle in the family Colydiidae (or allied family), endemic to Portugal and classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. This species is known from extremely limited localities in the Iberian Peninsula and represents one of the most threatened coleopteran taxa in Europe. The genus Sphaericus comprises small, cylindrical bark beetles associated with decaying wood and fungal substrates in old-growth forests. Sphaericus velhocabrali likely inhabits ancient forest remnants in Portugal, where it is associated with dead and decaying timber of native hardwood trees. Its Critically Endangered status reflects an extremely small known range, very few known populations, and ongoing habitat loss from logging, land conversion, and the replacement of native forest with eucalyptus and pine plantations across much of Portugal. Veteran and ancient trees that provide suitable dead wood habitat have become rare in the intensively managed Portuguese landscape. Little is known about the detailed ecology, biology, or reproductive habits of this species, and population estimates are unavailable. Conservation action for this beetle depends on the protection of old-growth forest remnants and the promotion of veteran tree retention in Portuguese forests.
