The genus is found primarily in the Andes region, spanning from Mexico through Central America and into South America. These orchids are noted for their strap-like leaves and elegant, often elongated flowers with characteristic twisted petals. Christiansen's phragmipedium is a relatively little-documented species with limited data on its precise distribution, population size, and ecological requirements. Conservation concerns for the genus as a whole include habitat destruction from deforestation and agricultural expansion, as well as illegal collection for the horticultural trade.
