This small, mat-forming bryophyte typically colonizes moist, acidic substrates along stream banks, seepages, and wet rock faces in cool-temperate habitats throughout Europe. Its flattened, overlapping leaves give the plant a compressed appearance, which inspired both its common and scientific names.
