Like all lovebirds, they form intensely bonded pair relationships reinforced through constant mutual preening. They nest colonially in large tree holes and termite mounds, lining nests with strips of bark. Near Threatened due to trapping for the pet trade and agricultural habitat conversion. Widely hybridized with Fischer's lovebird in captivity.
