Sphingobacterium thalpophilum is a thermotolerant Gram-negative rod capable of growth at moderately warm temperatures. It has been isolated from warm soils, compost, and clinical specimens. This aerobic chemoheterotroph degrades organic compounds over a broader temperature range than most related bacteria.
