Like other rust fungi, <em>Puccinia scirpi</em> is an obligate biotroph, meaning it can only complete its life cycle on living host tissue. Infections often produce orange-brown pustules on the stems and leaves of host plants, releasing urediniospores that spread the fungus to neighboring hosts.
