The adult wingspan typically measures 22–28 mm, with forewings displaying the characteristic carpet moth pattern of transverse bands and cross-lines in shades of grey, brown, and white, providing effective camouflage against tree bark and lichen-covered surfaces. The species inhabits deciduous woodland, scrubby hedgerows, and woodland margins where its larval foodplants, including chickweed (Stellaria species) and related low-growing herbaceous plants, are abundant. Adults fly in one or two generations per year depending on latitude, typically on the wing from late spring through late summer. Larvae feed through summer and autumn, pupating in soil or leaf litter. Like many geometrid moths, the cloaked carpet has experienced population declines across parts of its European range, attributed to loss of diverse woodland understory, reduction in traditional coppicing practices, and changes in land management that reduce the availability of shaded, moist microhabitats where foodplants thrive.
