Calothrix parasitica is a heterocystous cyanobacterium in the family Rivulariaceae, characterized by tapering filaments with a basal heterocyst for nitrogen fixation. The genus Calothrix is widespread in aquatic and terrestrial habitats where it plays a role in nitrogen input to ecosystems.
