Cigarette Beetle

Sphaericus velhocabrali is a beetle in the family Colydiidae (or allied family), endemic to Portugal and classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. This species is known from extremely limited localities in the Iberian Peninsula and represents one of the most threatened coleopteran taxa in Europe. The genus Sphaericus comprises small, cylindrical bark beetles associated with decaying wood and fungal substrates in old-growth forests. Sphaericus velhocabrali likely inhabits ancient forest remnants in Portugal, where it is associated with dead and decaying timber of native hardwood trees.
