Hemiselmis anomala is a unicellular cryptomonad alga found in marine and estuarine environments, characterised by its asymmetric, kidney-shaped cell and two unequal flagella for swimming. Cryptomonads like this species are significant contributors to phytoplankton communities in diverse aquatic habitats.
