Sphingomonas lacus is a Gram-negative, yellow-pigmented aerobic rod first isolated from lake water, as its species name indicates. It inhabits freshwater lacustrine environments including lakes and ponds of temperate regions. This aerobic chemoheterotroph decomposes dissolved organic matter and aromatic compounds in freshwater habitats.
