Populations are also found in montane and highland environments at higher elevations.

Sphingomonas jaspsi is a Gram-negative, yellow-pigmented aerobic rod producing xanthomonadin-related pigments in its outer membrane. It has been isolated from terrestrial and aquatic environments and is characterized by its sphingolipid-containing cell membrane. This aerobic chemoheterotroph degrades various organic substrates in soil and water environments.
