About

The Cliff Tiger Beetle, Cicindela species, is one of the large genus of tiger beetles in the family Carabidae (formerly Cicindelidae), adapted to open, sunny cliff faces, rocky outcrops, and stony ground where bare substrate provides both hunting ground and warming basalt for thermoregulation. Tiger beetles are among the fastest running insects and accomplished aerial predators of other small insects, using their large compound eyes for precise visual targeting and powerful, sickle-shaped mandibles for capturing prey. The metallic or patterned elytra common in many Cicindela species provide camouflage against variegated rock surfaces. Larvae live in vertical burrows excavated in soil or sand, closing the burrow entrance with their flat, heavily sclerotized head to trap passing prey. Cliff tiger beetles are often associated with calcareous cliff systems, limestone pavements, or hard quartzite and sandstone outcrops in temperate and Mediterranean regions. Many species of Cicindela have highly restricted distributions tied to specific cliff or substrate types, making them sensitive to quarrying, cliff erosion, and recreational rock climbing disturbance. Several European cliff tiger beetle species are listed as threatened on national and European red lists.
