Common Sugarbush
Protea repens, the common sugarbush, is a flowering shrub in the family Proteaceae, order Proteales. Native to the fynbos biome of South Africa's Western and Eastern Cape, it also occurs in Australia as part of its recorded distribution. It is one of the most widespread and ecologically important Protea species, typically growing in nutrient-poor, acidic soils on mountain slopes and lowland plains subject to periodic fire. The large, nectar-rich flower heads are a critical food source for a variety of nectarivorous birds, including sunbirds and Cape sugarbirds, as well as insects such as honeybees. Protea repens is serotinous, retaining seeds in woody cone-like structures until released by fire, a key adaptation to fynbos ecology. It is also historically used by local communities and the food industry for the production of a sweet syrup from its copious nectar. Biological traits including average individual lifespan and detailed growth measurements remain poorly documented. The species is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, although ongoing threats from invasive alien plants, agriculture, and urban expansion continue to reduce fynbos extent.
koala
