As a member of the genus <em>Bolitoglossa</em>, this salamander belongs to the largest genus of salamanders in the world, with members distributed throughout Central and South America. <em>Bolitoglossa rufescens</em> is lungless, relying entirely on cutaneous and buccal respiration, which makes it highly dependent on moist microhabitats to maintain adequate gas exchange through its skin.
