It is native to southern Africa, where it typically occurs in bushveld, grassland, and rocky hillside habitats, often on well-drained, nutrient-poor soils at various elevations. Like other members of the genus, <em>Protea caffra</em> is fire-adapted, resprouting vigorously from its rootstock following fire, an important life history trait in fire-prone African savannas. The species produces creamy-white to pink flower heads that attract sunbirds, insects, and small mammals in search of nectar, making it an important component of local pollination networks. Its seeds are dispersed by wind and animals. Precise geographic range data for this species remain incompletely documented across its African distribution.
