club mangrove

Aegialitis annulata, commonly known as the club mangrove or looking-glass mangrove, is a small mangrove shrub or tree in the family Plumbaginaceae, one of the few members of this primarily non-mangrove family to be adapted to intertidal environments. The species is native to coastal mangrove forests and mudflats in Australia and Papua New Guinea, where it grows along the landward margins of mangrove ecosystems, often in areas subject to higher salinity and less frequent tidal inundation than more seaward mangrove species. Like other mangroves, A. annulata possesses salt-excreting glands on its leaves and has anatomical adaptations for salt tolerance. The elongated, club-like fruits are distinctive features of this species, floating on water and dispersing via tidal currents. A. annulata is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a stable population in its native range. However, mangrove ecosystems globally face threats from coastal development, aquaculture expansion, and climate-related sea-level rise. In Australia, mangrove conservation is receiving increasing attention as these ecosystems are recognized as important carbon sinks and nursery habitats for fisheries.
