About

The world's smallest and most numerous flamingo species at up to 90 cm tall, lesser flamingos form the largest flamingo flocks on Earth — gatherings of over a million birds on East African Rift Valley lakes like Nakuru and Bogoria constitute one of the world's great wildlife spectacles. Their vivid pink color derives from blue-green algae (Spirulina) which they filter from highly alkaline, caustic soda lakes toxic to most other animals. Near Threatened.
