About

The Common Quince, Cydonia oblonga, is a small to medium-sized deciduous fruit tree in the family Rosaceae and the sole member of the genus Cydonia. It is believed to originate from the Caucasus and southwestern Asia and has been cultivated for thousands of years across Europe, the Middle East, and beyond, with naturalized and cultivated populations now recorded globally across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Oceania. The species typically grows in temperate climates with warm summers and mild winters, preferring well-drained, fertile soils and full sun exposure. Cydonia oblonga produces large, fragrant, pear-shaped to apple-shaped golden-yellow fruits that are astringent and hard when raw but become aromatic and softened upon cooking, making them highly valued for jellies, marmalades, and preserves. The white to pale pink flowers are attractive to pollinators in spring. Quinces have deep historical and cultural significance in Mediterranean and Near Eastern traditions and feature in ancient mythology and cuisine. The species is currently Not Evaluated on the IUCN Red List. Biological traits such as average lifespan, body size, and specific dietary preferences remain poorly documented for this species.
