Colombian Mahogany

<em>Cariniana pyriformis</em>, commonly known as Colombian Mahogany, is a plant species belonging to the genus <em>Cariniana</em> within the family Lecythidaceae. This species is classified as Critically Endangered, representing the highest category of extinction risk under international assessment frameworks, indicating a severe and immediate threat to its survival. It has been documented in Colombia, where it is associated with tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, dry broadleaf forests, and grassland or savanna biome types, reflecting broad ecological range across different vegetation zones. Colombian Mahogany is a large emergent tree of significant ecological and timber value. The species has historically been subject to heavy logging pressure, which, combined with extensive deforestation of Colombian lowland and foothill forests, has led to dramatic population reductions.
