Aulacoseira islandica is a robust, filamentous freshwater centric diatom forming long chains of cylindrical cells with prominent linking spines. It inhabits cold, oligotrophic to mesotrophic lakes in boreal, arctic, and montane regions across the Northern Hemisphere. This photosynthetic diatom is common under ice in cold-water lakes during winter and spring.
