Common Yellow Russula

<em>Russula ochroleuca</em>, the common yellow russula or ochre brittlegill, is a widespread ectomycorrhizal fungus in the family Russulaceae. It forms symbiotic associations with the roots of a broad range of forest trees, particularly conifers and broadleaved species such as oak and beech, making it one of the most frequently encountered Russula species in temperate woodlands across Europe and North America. The fruiting body typically features a pale yellow to ochre-yellow cap, 4–10 cm in diameter, with white to cream gills and a firm white stipe. The flesh is brittle and white, with a mild to slightly acrid taste. Biological traits such as precise average lifespan of fruiting bodies, mycelial biomass data, and population estimates remain poorly documented in the scientific literature. Fruiting bodies typically appear from summer through autumn in mixed and coniferous woodland. <em>Russula ochroleuca</em> is considered inedible due to its acrid or bitter taste, though it is not known to be significantly toxic. As an ectomycorrhizal species, it plays a vital ecological role in nutrient cycling and supporting tree health in forest ecosystems. The species is assessed as Least Concern, being abundant and widespread across suitable forest habitats.
