About

The Cocos Finch (Pinaroloxias inornata) is a small passerine bird in the family Thraupidae, and the sole member of its genus, endemic to Cocos Island in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Often cited alongside the Galápagos finches as a prime example of adaptive radiation on an oceanic island, the Cocos Finch demonstrates remarkable dietary flexibility, employing diverse foraging techniques—probing bark for insects, extracting nectar from flowers, gleaning foliage, and extracting seeds—behaviours normally distributed among multiple specialised species on continental land masses. Adults are small and brownish, with males displaying darker plumage than females. The species inhabits the entire forested area of Cocos Island, from sea level to the cloud forest of the island's interior peaks. Although assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN based on stable population estimates within the national park, the Cocos Finch remains intrinsically vulnerable due to its single-island distribution spanning roughly 24 square kilometres of total land area. Research by ornithologists has documented individual birds specialising in particular foraging methods, a phenomenon that offers insights into the early stages of niche diversification and speciation. Introduced species, particularly feral pigs, deer, and cats on Cocos Island, pose the principal conservation threats by degrading vegetation and predating nests.
