About

Vombatus ursinus, the coarse-haired wombat or common wombat, is a large, stocky marsupial in the family Vombatidae endemic to southeastern Australia, including Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, and Queensland. It is the most widespread and numerous of the three living wombat species and is characterized by its coarse, coarse-textured fur ranging from sandy to dark grey-brown, a large bare nose, and a robust body adapted for burrowing. Common wombats can weigh 20–35 kilograms and are powerful diggers, constructing extensive burrow systems up to 30 meters long that serve as shelter from predators and temperature extremes. They are herbivorous grazers, consuming grasses, sedges, roots, and bark in a wide variety of habitats including forests, woodlands, heathlands, and alpine areas. Wombats have one of the lowest metabolic rates among mammals of comparable size, an adaptation to survive on low-nutrient vegetation. They are solitary and primarily nocturnal, marking territories with their distinctive cube-shaped feces produced by a unique musculature of the digestive tract. The species is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, though localized threats include vehicle strikes, poisoning by landowners, and mange caused by the introduced mite Sarcoptes scabiei.
