Clover Root Borer

The clover root borer (Hylastinus obscurus) is a bark beetle in the family Scolytidae (or Curculionidae: Scolytinae depending on classification), order Coleoptera, that specializes on the woody crown and root tissue of leguminous plants, particularly red clover (Trifolium pratense). Unlike most bark beetles that infest woody trees, H. obscurus is unusual in tunneling through the relatively soft root and stem base of clover, creating extensive galleries that weaken and kill host plants. Adults bore into the crown tissue and upper roots, creating breeding galleries in which eggs are laid; larvae extend the galleries as they feed, causing structural damage that predisposes plants to secondary infection by fungal pathogens. H. obscurus is considered an important pest of red clover cultivation in many parts of its range. The species is native to Europe and has been inadvertently introduced to North America and Chile, extending its range through trade in contaminated clover seed. In Europe it is recorded across multiple countries including those in Scandinavia, and it is now established across much of the Northern Hemisphere wherever red clover is grown. The species inhabits clover-rich meadows and agricultural fields, particularly established perennial clover stands. H. obscurus is classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, with European populations showing decline associated with reduced area of long-rotation clover cultivation and agricultural intensification.
