About

The cloaked minor (Mesoligia furuncula) is a small noctuid moth in the family Noctuidae found across temperate Europe and western Asia. The adult wingspan measures approximately 20–25 mm, with forewings displaying a subtle pattern of warm buff, ochre, and brown tones with indistinct cross-lines and reniform and orbicular stigmata, providing effective background-matching camouflage on bark and dry vegetation. The species inhabits dry grasslands, heathlands, chalk downland, and coastal dunes where grasses of the genera Brachypodium, Bromus, and related species serve as larval foodplants. Adults fly in a single generation from July to August, visiting flowers for nectar at night. Larvae feed within grass stems and sheaths, overwintering as small caterpillars before completing development in spring. The cloaked minor has experienced declines in parts of Northwestern Europe due to loss of traditional hay meadows and chalk grasslands, reduction in scrub management practices, and habitat fragmentation that restricts population connectivity across agricultural landscapes.
