The Chonta Palm (Juania australis), also called the Chontaduro or Juan Fernandez Palm, is a slender, elegant palm in the family Arecaceae, endemic to the Juan Fernández Archipelago off the coast of Chile — one of the world's most isolated island groups and a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. This monotypic genus — the only species in Juania — is characterised by a single, slender trunk reaching up to 15 metres, graceful pinnate fronds, and the production of small, yellow-red fruits consumed by endemic birds. The Juan Fernández Archipelago is famous as the location of Alexander Selkirk's marooning (the basis for Robinson Crusoe), and its endemic flora and fauna have been subject to intense biological scrutiny. The Chonta Palm has been severely reduced from its former abundance on the islands by a combination of factors: browsing and trampling by introduced cattle, goats, and rabbits, which prevent regeneration; over-collection of the nutritious growing bud (heart of palm) for food; and competition from introduced plant species. The IUCN classifies it as Vulnerable. Conservation measures implemented on the islands, including feral animal removal and active replanting, have shown some success in allowing regeneration of populations, but the palm remains a vulnerable endemic threatened by the legacy of introduced species impacts.
