Common Striated Feather-Moss

<em>Eurhynchium striatum</em>, the common striated feather moss, is a pleurocarpous moss in the family Brachytheciaceae, order Hypnales. It is broadly distributed across Europe, Asia, and North America, typically colonizing shaded, humid habitats including deciduous woodland floors, stream banks, hedgerows, and rocky outcrops with moderate to high moisture levels. The species forms spreading, irregularly branched mats with glossy, striate leaves that give it a feather-like appearance. Like all mosses, <em>Eurhynchium striatum</em> lacks true vascular tissue and absorbs water and nutrients directly through its leaf surfaces. It plays an ecological role as a component of ground cover communities, contributing to moisture retention, providing microhabitat for invertebrates, and participating in nutrient cycling.
