Common Shiny Woodlouse

<em>Oniscus asellus</em>, the common shiny woodlouse, is a terrestrial isopod crustacean in the family Oniscidae, order Isopoda, native to western Europe and widely introduced to North America. This species is among the most frequently encountered woodlice in human-modified environments, typically inhabiting gardens, woodland leaf litter, rotting wood, compost heaps, and the undersides of stones and logs across Europe and the eastern United States. <em>Oniscus asellus</em> is a detritivore, feeding on decaying plant material, fungi, and associated microorganisms, playing an important role in soil nutrient cycling. It is recognized by its broadly oval, shiny gray body with pale lateral margins. As a crustacean that has successfully colonized terrestrial habitats, it retains gill-like structures for gas exchange and requires moist environments to survive. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN given its wide distribution and high abundance.
