common rose coral

<em>Manicina areolata</em>, the common rose coral, is a solitary stony coral in the family Mussidae, order Scleractinia, class Anthozoa. It is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List and is distributed across the Caribbean Sea and adjacent warm Atlantic waters, typically inhabiting shallow lagoonal and back-reef environments with soft sediment substrates. Unlike most scleractinian corals that are sessile and attached to hard substrate, <em>Manicina areolata</em> is notably free-living as an adult, resting unattached on sandy and silty seafloor habitats in waters typically from one to thirty meters depth. The species produces a distinctive elongated, rose-shaped corallum with meandering septa, giving rise to its common name. Like other scleractinian corals, the common rose coral harbors photosynthetic dinoflagellate algae (zooxanthellae) within its tissue, deriving a significant portion of its energy through this symbiotic relationship, while also capturing zooplankton and organic particles using nematocyst-bearing tentacles. Biological traits such as lifespan and body measurements remain poorly documented at the population level for this taxon, though corals can be long-lived. The species is vulnerable to warming ocean temperatures, bleaching events, and ocean acidification, which threaten its Caribbean habitat.
