Collared Towhee

The Collared Towhee, known scientifically as <em>Pipilo ocai</em>, is a passerine bird belonging to the family Passerellidae, the New World sparrows. <em>Pipilo ocai</em> is characterised by its striking plumage, which typically features black upperparts, a rufous-tinged collar, and a contrasting pale underside. Towhees are generally ground-foraging birds, using a characteristic double-scratch technique to disturb leaf litter and expose seeds and invertebrates. The Collared Towhee is typically associated with montane and highland forest habitats, particularly brushy undergrowth and forest edges at higher elevations.
