Chlorocardium rodiei

Data Deficient

About

Cogwood (Chlorocardium rodiei), also known as Greenheart, is a large canopy tree in the family Lauraceae, valued as one of the most commercially important timber species of the Guiana Shield in northern South America. Native to the rainforests of Guyana and Suriname, where it can be locally abundant, Cogwood produces exceptionally dense, hard, and durable timber that is naturally resistant to marine borers, decay fungi, and insect attack—properties that have made it historically prized for marine construction, dock piling, lock gates, bridges, and flooring exposed to high wear. Trees can reach heights of 40 metres or more with straight, cylindrical trunks supplying high-grade roundwood. The pale yellowish to olive-green heartwood contains alkaloids, including tubocurarine-related compounds, that confer both its natural durability and toxicity to insects and fungi. Chlorocardium rodiei is classified as Data Deficient by the IUCN, reflecting uncertainty about its population trajectory despite historical heavy exploitation for export timber, particularly from Guyana. Concerns exist that decades of selective logging have reduced populations of large mature trees. The species regenerates in forest gaps, but slow growth and high commercial value make sustainable management challenging. It remains an important source of export revenue for the Guyanese forestry sector.
