Codonella cratera is a marine planktonic ciliate protozoan in the order Tintinnida, family Codonellidae, characterised by its distinctive vase-shaped lorica—a secreted protective case—which is hyaline or lightly agglomerated with foreign particles and opens at one end to allow the organism to extend its ciliary crown for feeding. Tintinnids like Codonella cratera are heterotrophic microorganisms that prey on phytoplankton, bacteria, and other microorganisms using a ring of cilia to generate feeding currents. The genus Codonella belongs to an ecologically significant group of marine microzooplankton that serve as critical intermediaries in marine food webs, transferring energy from nano- and picoplankton to mesozooplankton and fish larvae. Codonella cratera has a cosmopolitan distribution in temperate and cold oceanic and coastal waters, recorded across the North Atlantic, the North Sea, and other productive marine systems including waters associated with Scandinavia. As a planktonic organism, its distribution is governed primarily by water mass movements, temperature, salinity, and prey availability rather than geographic barriers. No formal conservation assessment exists for this microscopic species. Tintinnids as a group are used as bioindicators of water quality and marine ecosystem health, with assemblage composition reflecting changes in productivity, pollution, and climate-driven hydrographic shifts.
