About

The Cocos Flycatcher (Nesotriccus ridgwayi) is a small tyrant flycatcher in the family Tyrannidae, endemic to Cocos Island, a remote volcanic island in the eastern Pacific Ocean administered as a Costa Rican national park. As the only representative of its monotypic genus, it exemplifies the degree of evolutionary isolation that small island ecosystems impose on colonising lineages. Adults are relatively plain, with olive-brown upperparts, yellowish underparts, and faint eye-ring markings. The species is an active aerial insectivore, sallying from exposed perches to catch flying insects in the humid forest interior and forest edge habitats that characterise the island. The Cocos Flycatcher is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to its extremely limited range on a single island of approximately 24 square kilometres, which means that even localised habitat degradation or a stochastic event such as a storm or disease outbreak could have severe population-level consequences. The principal threats are introduced mammals, including feral pigs and cats, which alter forest structure and consume small vertebrates. Cocos Island's designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a fully protected national park provides significant conservation value, and ongoing invasive species control programmes aim to reduce mammalian pressures on native wildlife. Population monitoring remains challenging due to the island's remoteness and difficult terrain.
