About

The Cochise foxtail cactus (Escobaria robbinsorum) is a diminutive, globose to short-cylindrical cactus endemic to a small area straddling the Arizona–Sonora borderlands in the United States and Mexico. Growing to just a few centimetres in height, it occurs in open grassland and semi-desert scrub on rocky limestone or calcareous soils, typically at elevations between 1,300 and 1,700 metres. The plant produces clusters of slender spines and, in spring, small pink to lavender flowers that are followed by fleshy red fruits attractive to birds and small mammals. As a species of the genus Escobaria — a group of small cacti sometimes called pincushion or foxtail cacti — it is adapted to arid conditions through succulent water-storing tissues and reduced leaf area. Escobaria robbinsorum is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to its extremely limited range — estimated at less than 100 square kilometres — combined with threats from illegal collection for the ornamental plant trade, livestock trampling, invasive grass species that can alter fire regimes, and the long-term potential impacts of climate-driven aridification. The species occurs partly within protected areas in both countries, providing some degree of security, but its naturally small and fragmented populations make it inherently susceptible to stochastic events. Active monitoring and control of illegal collection are priority conservation actions.
