Nesticodes rufipes is a small cobweb spider in the family Theridiidae, closely associated with human habitation and distributed across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide through unintentional human transport. The species is small—females typically 3–6 millimeters—with a distinctive reddish-orange leg coloration that provides its species epithet 'rufipes' (Latin: red-footed). The abdomen is pale to yellowish with variable markings. Nesticodes rufipes constructs untidy, three-dimensional cobwebs in sheltered corners of buildings, under furniture, in bathroom and kitchen environments, and in other warm, humid indoor microhabitats. It feeds primarily on small insects such as mosquitoes, flies, and gnats that are attracted to the light and warmth of human structures. The species appears to have originated in tropical regions—possibly Africa or the Indo-Pacific—but has followed human commerce to achieve a pantropical and warm-temperate distribution that now encompasses parts of North America, Europe (in heated buildings), South America, and across Asia. Females produce egg sacs suspended within the web, and juveniles disperse readily. Despite its ubiquity in human environments, the spider is harmless to humans—its venom is effective only against small arthropod prey. Its conservation status has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN, though its association with human structures makes population decline unlikely.
