About

Cliff Brake is a common name for ferns in the genus Pellaea, family Pteridaceae, known for their adaptation to dry, rocky cliff faces and outcrops across North America, South America, Africa, and Australia. Pellaea species are among the most drought-tolerant ferns, capable of growing on exposed rock surfaces in full sun, in habitats where other ferns cannot survive. The fronds are typically pinnate to bipinnate with leathery, dark green to bluish-green leaflets, often with revolute margins that curve under to protect the spore-bearing sori. The common name refers directly to their rocky cliff habitat. Species such as the Purple Cliff Brake (Pellaea atropurpurea) and the Smooth Cliff Brake (Pellaea glabella) are typical of calcareous rock faces, shale ledges, and limestone cliffs in eastern North America. The genus is well adapted to the extreme microclimate of rock faces: intense solar radiation, temperature extremes, and periodic desiccation. When conditions become too dry, the fronds curl and the plant enters dormancy, reviving with rainfall. Cliff brakes are not generally threatened and occur in habitats that are naturally resistant to agricultural disturbance, though quarrying and rock climbing can affect localized populations.
