Cinereous Finch

Piezorina cinerea

Least Concern

About

The cinereous finch (Piezorina cinerea) is a small, seed-eating bird in the family Thraupidae, endemic to the coastal deserts and arid scrub of western Peru. It inhabits the Lomas vegetation formations—fog-fed plant communities on Pacific-facing slopes of the Andes—as well as dry coastal scrub and desert margins from approximately the Lambayeque region south to Lima and Ica departments. The male is overall gray with a pale bill and underparts, matching the gray, dusty environments it inhabits. This species is highly range-restricted and adapted to one of the world's driest coastal environments. The cinereous finch is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, with populations considered stable within its arid coastal niche. The Lomas ecosystems of coastal Peru are ephemeral and highly seasonal, appearing during cooler months when Pacific fog provides moisture, and disappearing during drier, hotter periods. Overgrazing, urban expansion, and mining threaten these specialized habitats and the endemic species dependent on them. The cinereous finch is entirely absent from Europe; any database record associating it with Norway is a data artifact resulting from incorrect geographic coordinates or data entry error. The species belongs to a radiation of tanager-finches adapted to arid Pacific coastal habitats in South America.
