Ciceribacter lividus is a species of bacteria in the family Rhizobiaceae, first described from soil samples in Taiwan. It is a Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium that, like other members of its family, has the capacity to fix atmospheric nitrogen in association with leguminous plant roots, forming symbiotic root nodules. The genus Ciceribacter is named in reference to Cicer arietinum (chickpea), reflecting the association of related bacteria with legume nitrogen fixation. Ciceribacter lividus was characterized based on culture characteristics, biochemical tests, and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, which placed it within the alpha-Proteobacteria. The species has not been assessed by the IUCN, as bacteria are not typically included in mainstream conservation assessments. Nitrogen-fixing rhizobia like Ciceribacter lividus are of considerable agricultural and ecological importance, as biological nitrogen fixation reduces the dependence of leguminous crops on synthetic fertilizers and contributes to soil fertility in natural ecosystems. Taiwan's subtropical agricultural soils host diverse communities of nitrogen-fixing bacteria, and Ciceribacter lividus represents part of this microbial biodiversity. Research on its host range, symbiotic efficiency, and ecological distribution in soil communities remains ongoing. Such bacteria are also of interest in agricultural biotechnology for their potential to improve crop yields sustainably.
